Tom Foden was the matchwinner, with a try in the very last moments after Chester progressed from their own half with a series of moves.
Matt Sheen and Paul Campbell gained the other tries and Simon Verbickas a first-half penalty.
Campbell was excellent in the Chester second-row but Gavin Taylor in the back-row earned the manof-the-match award.
