PLAYERS and staff at Caldy Rugby Football Club are celebrating after being voted the best sport club on Merseyside.

The Wirral outfit was honoured for its fundraising work and its efforts to promote rugby union in schools.

Caldy members have introduced the sport into eight primary and secondary schools in Wirral. Meanwhile, the third team raised money to buy sports equipment for teams in Romania.

Caldy, which has more than 300 young members, were also one of the first clubs to be awarded the Rugby Football Union and Sport England's Seal of Approval for its youth and mini-rugby programmes.

Caldy officials received the Sports Club of the Year Award at a dinner organised by Merseyside Sports Partnership.

Tony Atherton, Caldy's Director of Rugby, said: "Nice as awards are, we will not be sitting back on our laurels. We will continue to move our standards forward while still enjoying the recognition for the work that has already been done by so many people within the club."
