GOOD early pressure by Winnington saw Ben Barton looking back to his best - but it all came to nothing as Carlisle romped to victory on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead before Winnington fought back with good runs from prop Will Burgess and winger Rick Shaw. But the home side's momentum was disrupted with the departure of flanker Ben Richardson with a ham-string problem, which gave Cheshire Under-19s colt Richard Armstrong a chance on his first-team debut.

Park broke deep into the Carlisle 22 before a pass was intercepted and the visitors raced forward for an unconverted try.

Another score before half-time put the match beyond Winnington and the second half followed a similar pattern; though after Carlisle had scored again, Park hit back immediately with Armstrong crossing the line for a debut try.

After more pressure, Carlisle were awarded a penalty before paceman Boyd completed his hat-trick. But Winnington made a late surge on the Carlisle line and impressive tackling winger Rick Shaw went under the post, with Barton converting.

Carlisle had the last say with a drop goal from Nelson.

Forced into a significant reshuffle due to injuries and unavailability, Winnington Park Senior Colts were always going to struggle against a strong Wirral side who have been setting the pace in their league, eventually going down 29-8.

The visitors got off to a dream start and were 12 points to the good within the first 10 minutes but Park forced their way back into the game and, following a trademark catch and drive from a lineout, David MacAllister scored a well-deserved try. Ben Elliot later slotted a penalty.

A tough test for Winnington Park U14s saw them defeated by a strong Altrincham Kersall XV.

Despite an excellent display by the pack and a try for Euan Travis, converted by Howard Knowles, the team went down 34-7.

Park U13s beat Altrincham Kersall 25-5 with tries scored by Pym, Bellis (2) Spaven and Alston.
