HOCKEY: Tempers frayed at times but Winnington Park Ladies kept their cool to win 3-1 at Congleton-based South Cheshire on Saturday.

Top-class North League umpire Karen Smith did well to keep a lid on proceedings in a highly charged game.

Winnington were missing several key players but goals from Chris Davies, Karen Thwaites and Eileen Miller and an outstanding performance by Kirsty Robinson put them in charge.

They go into the Cheshire League First Division run-in just a point behind leaders Macclesfield.

Thwaites scored a hat-trick and Cathy Hewitson was also on the mark as Winnington Park beat Chester 4-1 at home the previous week.

Winnington were two up at the break and had to withstand a period of Chester pressure before wrapping the game up. Player-coach Chris Davies was in great form.

The Weaverham coach took a team of mainly Mid Cheshire youngsters to Marbella, where they played the Power Junior Golf Academy in an eight-a-side tournament.

Moore's International Golf School prot g s won the inaugural Moore-Power Cup 14 points to 1 points.

'The outstanding play from my team floored the opposition, some matches barely going past the ninth hole,' said Moore.

'It would be difficult for me to single out any of my team as the all-round team spirit, professionalism and dedication was second to none.

'Winsford-based captain Daniel Rowlands and his two deputies Lewis Jackson and Chris Blades were outstanding in their leadership and consulted me all the way about the pairings.'

Daniel, 12, said: 'I am proud to have lead such a strong and dedicated team, I am looking forward to next year when I know we will retain the trophy.'
