WINNINGTON Park have moved on a decade and back two.

After the success of the reunion of 1970s personnel they are bringing together players from the 1980s.

It is part of Park's centenary celebrations with the old boys being recalled to Burrows Hill for the match against Whitchurch on January 6.

They can mull over some glorious times. The team, pictured above, were history makers, winning rugby union's first ever league in 1986.

Winnington's Girobank League champions included the club's most famous son, Dewi Morris, who two years later won the first of 26 international caps with England.

Park went on to retain their Girobank title and climbed through the ranks to figure in the top 50 clubs in the country.

The side also included the likes of Gareth Lloyd, Andy McGarrigle, Dave Alcock and prop forward, now club president, Chris Gleave.

Morris, 42, is a still a regular visitor to Burrows Hill.

They were halcyon times for the club and not only in terms of victories.

They launched an over-35s veterans team for the first time and on occasion fielded seven sides on the same Saturday.

Neighbours Northwich were also regularly sending out five teams and RL team Weaverham Highfield - later Rangers - were also in action, making the 1980s rugby's most popular era.

After a dismal first half to the season organiser Dave Rees is hoping the reunion of one of the great Winnington teams will inspire a revival in 2007.
