THE new-look Cheshire Youth Games saw Ellesmere Port travel outside the town to compete for the first time in three years.

The Games were held in Macclesfield after a three-year stint in the Port.

They were restructured for 2008, with only four competitive events being held and the rest operating as taster sessions for young people to try different sports.

About 750 young people from across Cheshire attended and tried archery, judo, urban sports, futsal, handball, rowing, paddlesport, racketball and table tennis.

The four competitive sports were badminton (boys and girls), basketball, cheerleading and rugby.

The borough of Warrington took most of the trophies, with Crewe and Nantwich winning the fair play award.

Sport Cheshire chairman David Newton said: “The Youth Games were a great success and a wonderful showcase for sport. The great thing is that they provided an opportunity for young people to find out what sports they might like and what suits their talents.”
