TENNIS: THE brightest and best of Cheshire's young tennis talent took to the court at Lymm and Stockton Tennis Clubs last week for the county championships.

There were singles events for boys and girls at under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 level, with doubles for under 14 and 18 and mixed doubles at under 18.

In the boys under 18 championships, defending champion Scott Dickson faced off against Peter Murray but was unable to defend his crown, Peter winning 6-3, 7-5.

The under 16 champion is Bradley Topps who beat Matthew Buckley 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in a close match.

Matthew did enjoy some success in the under 14 singles when he overcame Alex Newell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

Finally top seed Liam Broady was the champion at under 10 level, beating number two seed Jonathon Bradley 6-3, 6-1.

The girls under 18 singles champion was top seed Samantha Murray who beat Jenny Jones 6-4, 6-4, after Jenny had taken the under 16 event with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Lisa Sutton, the top seed at that level.

The run continued with Lisa enjoying victory at under 14 level over Naomi Broady with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Ashlea Stewart is the under 12 champion after dominating her final tie with Amanda Murray, 6-0, 6-1.

In the under 10s singles, Neston's Sharni Jones defeated Danielle Webster 6-2, 6-1.

The doubles competitions saw some close finals, with the girls under 18 doubles going to Samantha Murray and Lisa Sutton 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Cross and Jones. Naomi Broady and Natalie Grundy were the under 14 champions, while Amanda Murray and Moya Kerr lifted the under 12 crown.

For the boys, Peter Murray and Ben Davies won the under 18 doubles, Matthew Buckley and Michael Meagan were the under 14 champions and Jordan McCulloch and Alex Newell won the under 12s. The mixed doubles title was won by Peter and Samantha Murray.
