HOSTS Ellesmere Port and Neston bagged a hat-trick of victories at the Cheshire Youth Games on Saturday, winning the boys' basketball and girls' U15s and U13s netball.

More than 1,300 youngsters from across the county took part at the event, which was held outside Macclesfield for the first time since its inception in 1999.

Stanney Sports College, David Lloyd Leisure, Whitby Park and EPIC provided the venues.

The crowds were out in force on the day as good weather blessed the event and sports fans from Ellesmere Port, plus the friends and family of participants from across Cheshire, descended on the site to cheer on the action in 12 disciplines.

The skies remained clear during the seven hours of competition but a gentle breeze ensured those taking part did not have to contend with the stifling heat of

earlier last week. The games commenced with a mass warm-up for participants at each site led by the Port's oldest boxing club, Golden Star ABC.

The games already holds competitions in aquathlon, athletics, basketball, boccia, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby and swimming.

However, there are plans for expansion in the future - and boxing could be one of the new sports on the bill as a semi-contact event.

Daniel Schofield from organiser Sport Cheshire said: 'I'd like to give a big thanks to the people of Ellesmere Port for providing us with the venues. We felt everything went well on the day and the youngsters enjoyed themselves.'
