ATHLETICS: WEST CHESHIRE AC scored success at different ends of the age scale at the weekend.

The purple-vested club's senior roadrunners grabbed a team success, and three of the Chester and Ellesmere Port club's junior age group squads clinched team victories.

Ken Begley spearheaded West Cheshire to glory in the first round of the Borders Road Running League Series staged at Shotton and hosted by Deestriders on a five miles course.

He clocked 29 minutes 53 seconds to secure fifth position, and received support from Andy Starkey (seventh in 30:05); Ian Wedge (10th in 30:21); Graham Jenkins (11th in 30:34); Graham Earlam (14th in 31:06); Gary Munslow (15th in 31:15); Gary Withers (19th in 31:38); Andrew Clague (31st in 32:18); Paul Price (36th in 32:22); and 10th scoring member, Richard Batterham (72nd in 34:24).

West Cheshire AC's men finished on 220 points, ahead of runners-up Buckley Runners on 318 and third-placed Wirral AC, with 389.

Under-20 junior, Luke Northall, from Wrexham AC, won the race in a time of 27 minutes 49 seconds, and Simon Shiels (Abergele) finished second in 27:55 ahead of Buckley duo, Chris Davies (29:42) and Clive West (29:47) who finished third and fourth respectively.

* WEST CHESHIRE AC capitalised on home advantage at the third round of the North West Sportshall League held at the EPIC Leisure Centre, Ellesmere Port.

The under-15 boys, under-13 boys, and under-13 girls teams all finished the match in pole position, while the under-15 girls, and under 11 boys and girls teams all finished in runners-up positions.

Tom Price, Carl Van Schie, James Callaghan, Sean Boyd, Andrew Stothart, and Anthony Howard all scored points for the under-13 boys, before Price, Van Schie, Jones, and Matthew Kenny secured a thrilling relay victory.

Gareth Preston, Huw Williams, Jeremy Wilderspin, Jeremy Stothart, Tom Lowndes, and Andrew Whitton put points on the board for the club's under-13 boys, before Preston anchored the relay team home to success.

Daisy Flynn-Piercy, Rebecca Grimes, Shona Valentine, Stephanie Owen, Kerry Riley, Ruth Pritchard, and Rosa Palmieri pointed the under-13 girls to victory, before Flynn-Piercy produced a memorable anchor leg for success in the relay.

* SEVERAL West Cheshire AC youngsters produced a series of impressive displays at Sheffield's new indoor arena on Saturday.

Owens bagged new bests in the shot (7.61m) and 60m (9.05 seconds); Tom Price clocked bests in the 60m (7.60) and 200m (24.42); and Gareth Preston lected an U15 grade three 60m best of 7.96, and a new shot best of 7.47m.

Rachel Stoakley completed the West Cheshire contingent and posted a grade two U15 best of 8.37 seconds in the 60m, and 27.54 in the 200m.
