ANGLING: BLACON'S John Woodrow had an impressive 70lbs 12 oz of carp in the Heronbrook Fishery open match on Sunday, but he had to settle for third place.

Lee Saville, of Ellesmere Port, won his section with 28lbs of carp and chub.

The serving officers came out on top in their annual Cheshire Police flyfishers' challenge match against retired officers at Barnsfield reservoir. Leading the serving officers were Anton Dureden with 11-7-0, Chris Webster 9-8-0, Gary Fowles 8lbs and Dave Allen with 7-5-0 for a total of 36-4-0 of mainly rainbows. Top for the retired officers were Tom Fitzpatrick with 10lbs, including a 2-8-0 tiger trout, Fred Marsh 9-4-0, Roy Woolacott 8-7-0 and Peter Hindle 5-4-0 for a total of 32-15-0.

Dave Griffiths was top in the Upton AC match on the Golden Nook length of the SU Canal at Waverton with a 3-15-0 mixture. Phil Hardman had 3-7-0 and Steven Hughes 2-2-0.

Kevin Carr, of Chester, a member of Flint AA, won Sunday's winter league match at the paper mill pool with 6-13-15 of roach.

Paul Knight led the Helsby Sports and Social Club AC match at the BICC factory pools with a 3-5-0 mixture, beating Chris Hargadon's 1-6-8 and Phil Wainwright's 0-10-0.

Dave Bampton was a clear winner of the Greyhound, Saughall AC match at Milton Green Fishery with 16-10-0 of carp, ahead of Glyn Roberts's 8lbs of carp and Peter Johnson's 7-12-0 of carp.

Trevor Roberts triumphed on a dour day in the Railway, Barrow AC match on a high and coloured Severn at Gravel Hill. His 1-2-0 of dace beat Colin Owen's 0-9-0 and Bob Ruscoe's 0-7-0.

Mike Flanaghan, of Rod 'N' Reel, was top in the open match on the Weaver at North-wich with 12-11-0 of roach, skimmers and a 1lb perch. Third was team-mate Lee Saville with 11-10-0 of roach.

Neil Patterson won Saturday's Willaston AC open match on the SU Canal at Wardle with a 9-10-13 net of skimmers and hybrids. Bernie Leatherbarrow had 7-8-2 of skimmers and Mark Wall took 4-3-2 of roach.

Mick Davies led the field in the Burton Mere Fishery open match on Sunday with 22lbs of carp, ahead of Barry Davies's 13-11-0 and Steve Gerrard's 5-15-8. The previous Wednesday, Steve Parry took a carp-based 23-9-0 to win from Jim O'Hara, who had 15-2-0 and Ron Hullock with 12-15-0 of carp.

Mickle Trafford AC fished their pairs match for the Moorcroft Shield on Sunday at Wal-Goch Fishery at Nannerch and the trophy went to Derek Bale with 6-5-0 of rainbows and John McHugh, who had 3-8-0, for a total of 9-13-0. Runners-up were Dave Huxley, with a 6-8-0 brace, and Kevin Quayle, who had a 3-1-0 rainbow for a 9-9-0 total. Third were Peter Halsey and Dave Sanders with a 7-12-0 total.

Victory in the Peg One AC match at Lloyd's Meadow Fishery went to Les Jones with 25lbs of carp from Stuart Duncan's 14-4-0, including a 6-12-0 common carp, and Brian Woodall who had a 7lbs common.

Kevin Thornton was up front in the Air -bus, Broughton AC match on beat six at Holt on the Dee with 1-7-0 of chub, roach and eel. Mick Rogers was top rod in the Cestrian AC match on the Red Lion length of the Weaver with 9-2-0 of roach, from Eddie Rogers who had 7-7-0 and John Tyreman with 6-8-0.

The Rake and Pikel AS fished the marina area on the Weaver where 14-1-0 of roach earned victory for Jeff Williams, over Jimmy Page who took 11-2-0 and Dave Spencer with 8-8-12.

Martin Holding landed 33lbs of skimmers, roach and carp to win the Tarvin Sands AC match on pool five on the Cheshire Fishery on Tuesday last week. Les Picken was just 2lbs behind and Shaun Sandham took third spot with a carp-based 27lbs. The Thursday match went to Sam Kennedy with 30lbs, from Shaun Sandham's 27lbs and Martin Holding with 25-12-0.

FISHERIES News Milton Green: Dave Evans, of Ellesmere Port, netted 23lbs of perch up to 1-8-0 as well as carp and roach using maggot or caster.

Burton Mere: Tom Pritchard, of Wirral, tempted an 18-12-0 common carp to a sauce boilie.

Meadow: Bill Jones, of Ellesmere Port, coaxed a 5-12-0 rainbow to a buzzer.

Forest Hill: Sixteen-year-old Ray Thompson, of Wirral, fished a worm to take a 5lbs rainbow.

Tree Tops: Eddie Wilkinson, of Helsby, tempted a 6-1-0 rainbow to a drowned daddy longlegs.

Llandegla: Tony Williamson, of Ellesmere Port, fished an orange booby to take a 4-8-0 rainbow.

Lake Hill: Ross Mundy, of Chester, fished worm to take a 5lbs rainbow and a 3lbs brace; Roger Lightfoot, of Neston, netted six rainbows for 12lbs to a worm; and Carl Clewley, of Rossett, lured rainbows of 7lbs and 4lbs to a worm.

Dearnford Hall: Tony Curtis, of Chester, landed the best fish of the week, a 9-1-0 rainbow taken with a gold-headed damsel fly and Keith Armstead, of Waverton, found the best brownie weighing 8-1-0, using a brown leech pattern.
