The chairman of Wirral CP Boxing Club has hailed the people of Ellesmere Port for the generosity they have shown towards its fight for survival
The 34-year-old club launched an appeal in February to raise £80,000 in 10 months when its home on Station Road, Little Sutton, was put up for sale.
The club is on track to reach that target with four months to go, meaning the dream of buying the premises could become a reality by the end of the year. Boxers, coaches and parents have been taking on challenges and organising fundraisers to help save the club – and chairman Peter Phelan has been amazed by the generosity around the town.
He said: “It’s been heartwarming the way the community has come together to support us.
“It’s almost become contagious and I think people can see the camaraderie is excellent and want to be part of that.
“We set ourselves a target of £8,000 a month over 10 months and at the moment we are ahead of the game so we’re progressing nicely but I don’t want to tempt fate.
“We are within touching distance but we can’t afford to rest on our laurels because if we do then the next thing we know it’ll be Christmas and we’ll still be short.
“We’ll keep working hard and climbing mountains, packing bags, sitting in tins of bins and whatever else we can think of but the support we have had has been unreal.
“There are too many people for me to thank individually but Mark Gooding and Tony Kelly have been a massive help, and there are strangers coming up to me and giving us £50 here or £30 there and it’s very touching.”
Wirral CP hosted a fun day and Motown night at Whitby Sports & Social Club over the weekend which raised more than £3,800.
Members raised thousands of pounds completing the Three Peaks Challenge earlier this summer and the club has organised a charity boxing dinner for October 30.
Phelan said: “It’s been non-stop really because when we finish one thing we start looking at the next one.
“To be honest I’ve been a bit out of my comfort zone organising these things and you can give me a boxing tournament over this any day but people keep putting their hands in their pockets and keep amazing us.
“We’ve had help from some of the businesses in the town but there are others out there who could help us get over the finish line and that’s something we’re working on now.”
