WINNINGTON grabbed a draw from a game that threatened to boil over at Sir John Deane's College on Saturday.

Tempers frayed in the first half when a Wigan played rapped his stick across Jeff Dodd's legs and, while he had to sit out the remainder of the half recovering, his assailant spent only 10 minutes in the sin bin.

Park were ahead at the time, Dennis Topping receiving the ball at the top of the circle and scoring with a neat drag flick.

But they were still incensed about the umpire's leniency when Wigan levelled in their first genuine attack. John Paul Dodd saved the initial shot, but Winnington failed to clear their lines and Wigan snaffled up a second chance.

A smartly taken penalty corner made it 2-1 for the visitors and it took Park a while to get back into the game.

Wigan began to defend deeper inside their own half and Park's best efforts became limited to set pieces as Topping and Dave Leech both tested the goalkeeper from penalty corners.

Their hard was work was at last rewarded midway through the second half when Topping, so often the catalyst for much of Park's attacking play, fed Steve Campagnaro and he bravely bundled the ball home after a well-worked short corner to level the scores.

Park 2nds missed chances and went down 2-1 at Daten after John Lavin had put them in front from a short corner.

Tim Boxall and Will Eggleston netted for Park 3rds in their 2-2 draw at South Cheshire 4ths.

Winnington Park Ladies 5 Deeside 1: Winnington had only a moment's doubt on Saturday.

It came just before the break after they had scored three times. A Deeside player launched into a penetrating run and made scoring easy for herself.

But otherwise Winnington dominated the game and played some fine hockey.

They pounced on an error in midfield to take an early lead, Karen Morgan making ground down the right wing and crossing for Eileen Miller to score.

The same combination produced goal number two and some precision passing from a short corner found Helen Cartin to finish coolly.

With Deeside reducing the arrears as half-time neared, Park were determined on the restart to crush their hopes of a comeback. They were solid in defence and restored a three-goal advantage when Clare Johnson scored her first goal of the season from a short corner. Leona Trimble completed the rout.

Anna Shone and Ellie Cap-stick gave Park 2nds a two-goal lead against Crewe Vagrants 2nds, who hit back to draw 2-2.

Saturday: 1st away v Northern, 2nds home v Timperley.
