WEST Cheshire AC warmed up for this weekend's opening Borders Road League race in style.

The club secured a string of awards after the final round of the Wirral Multi-Terrain League Series staged at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead.

Laura Bestow and Dave Alexander spearheaded the West Cheshire trophy charge after winning their overall age category series.

Bestow won the under 30 age group, four points clear of her nearest rival Joanne Lawrence, from Wirral AC, after grabbing two victories from her four appearances.

Bestow also finished second in the overall ladies finishing positions, just one point adrift of eventual winner Ruth Isaacs of Pensby Runners.

Alexander won the U40 age group title after celebrating a flawless clean sweep of four victories.

He finished three points clear of nearest rival Morten Gammelsaeter, of Wirral, and is full of confidence ahead of this Sunday's Borders League race.

Alexander finished third overall in the men's overall standings, just five points behind eventual winner Adam Peers, from Liverpool Harriers, and second-placed Wirral AC member Tom Madden.

Alexander spearheaded West Cheshire AC to success in the men's team event after being supported by Gary Roberts, third in the over 40 age group, and Brian Beattie, third in the O60 age category.

Other West Cheshire AC members who managed to secure top-20 places in the overall men's standings included junior man Louis Humphreys who finished ninth, just one place ahead of Gary Roberts.

Graham Jenkins and Graham Earlam finished 15th and 16th respectively, ahead of Gary Withers, Alec Beaney and Russell Kirk, who finished 18th, 19th, and 20th.

Brian Hastings and Mike Lamb secured fourth and sixth positions in the O60 age group, and Andy Duf-field finished 23rd in the O40 age category, while Mark Povey was 26th in the U40 age group, and Alex Haswell finished 12th in the young athletes series.

Kerry Riley was the other West Cheshire award winner, finishing third overall in the U20 age group and 14th lady overall.

West Cheshire AC finished first in both A and B team events overall to boost morale ahead of this Sunday's Borders League race at Capenhurst (11am start).

West Cheshire's mens squad will be attempting to win the Borders League title for a fourth successive year when the runners are called under starter's orders this weekend.

West Cheshire AC will also have members in action at this Saturday's North Staffs Cross Country League first round at Newcastle-Under-Lyne, while the North West Sportshall League first round takes place at Deeside College, Connah's Quay, on Sunday (12 noon start).
