ATHLETICS: WEST Cheshire AC youngsters are celebrating after the U13 boys squad ensured all six age groups will be represented in this season's North West Sportshall League finals.

A small team consisting of just Aidan Stoakley, Tom Booth, Michael McCormick and Sam Rimmer defied the odds to finish in second place at the final round in Widnes.

Booth was runner-up in the standing long jump with 2.25m and Stoakley clinched victory in the B event with 2.15m.

McCormick hit 5.42m in the shot put to finish second, and Sam Rimmer secured second spot in the B event with 4.11m.

To cap a fine weekend's work for the youngsters, four of the club's six teams triumphed in their team competitions.

Alice Jennings, Jenni Potter, Alice McMahon, and Tessa McCormick teamed up to earn West Cheshire's

U11 girls' success in their relay race while Abbie Kirk headed West Cheshire U13 girls' charge with a double victory in the two lap and six-lap races.

Gareth Preston, Matthew Pratt, Alan Littler, Matthew White and Jack Stone combined to earn West Cheshire's U15 boys' victory while the squad of Daisy Flynn-Piercy, Shona Valentine, Beccy Grimes, Kerry Riley, Stephanie Owens, Ruth Pritchard, and Laura Stott spearheaded success for West Cheshire's U15 girls.

Elsewhere the men's veterans retained top spot in their Borders League team competitions.

Graham MacNeil claimed fifth spot at the third-round five-mile race held at Mold, with Dave Tiernan ninth and Gary Roberts 13th.

Heather McLintock was West Cheshire's first lady home after clinching seventh spot ahead of L Parsons in tenth.

Fixtures this weekend include the Liverpool and District Cross Country Championships at Clarke Gardens, Allerton on Sunday, and the Northern Vets AC 10k Road Race, at Stockton Heath, Warrington. nWest Cheshire youngster Andrew Whitton, 15, was celebrating after winning the club's best male trophy for overall performance during the annual awards at Chester City FC on Friday evening.
