FELL RUNNING: MIKE Weedall has won his first international vest - at the age of 47!

The Winsford-based Middlewich postman turned in a first-class performance at the weekend's England fell running trials at Keswick.

Weedall, a Vale Royal Athletics Club veteran, won the Over 45s category and was automatically selected for the World Championships in Germany next month.

'It is my first vest and hopefully I've got a good race in me.

'They call it mountain racing abroad and prefer their finishes on a summit, which should suit me. We do the downhill part as well, but I am a better climber than a descenter.

'The trial was tough. It still hurt two days later, especially my thighs.

'I have done harder events, but this was my first fell race for two years. I just decided I'd have a go and I surprised myself.'

Weedall is now seeking backing for his run in the Black Forest.
