ANGLING: ELLESMERE Port's Phil Weaver took top honours for Chester Tackle Locker in Sunday's Crewe & District Winter League match held on the Shropshire Union canal at Market Drayton, writes BRIAN ROBERTS.

Phil overcame adverse conditions to take roach for 3-9-0, putting him second on the day while support came from Mike Beaumont who was second in his section with 2-1-0 of roach.

Two Ellesmere Port trout fishers struck lucky on the Meadow Fishery at Mickle Trafford last week as Steven Last lured a 4-8-0 rainbow trout to a black buzzer while Bill Jones tempted a 3-8-0 rainbow to a bloodworm.

Sunday's bad weather forced the curtailment of the Peg 1 AC match on the Four Oaks Fishery.

At that stage, there was only one weigher with Glyn Jones taking 6-0 of perch.

Saturday's Angling Times Knockout Team Champion-ship match saw Maghull finish top on the Leeds and Liverpool canal with 24 points, ahead of Wirral Borough Council and Ellesmere Port Royal British Legion.

Top weighers for Wirral Borough Council were Ken Stuart, fourth with roach and perch for 1750g, followed by Keith Williamson (1040g) and Mark Greasley (900g).

Andy Fletcher was top rod for EPRBL with 525g of roach and was backed up by Jimmy Grimes with 400g of roach and Mick Ray with 425g.

Chris Hargadon landed first place in Sunday's Helsby Sports & Social Club AC match on the BICC factory pools with a mix of chub and crucians for 5-4-0.

Malcolm Lightfoot had a bream and roach mix for 3-5-0 while Steve Furfie took small roach for 1-3-8.

Trevor Worthington topped the catches last week at the Dearnford Hall Trout Fishery, at Whitchurch, as he bagged 16 fish including a 5-8-0 rainbow, all taken to a white fritz lure.
