HOT Vale Royal AC prospect Stevie Stockton won an Under 17s bronze medal at the National Inter Counties Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

But that was only half of the achievement of the club and the athlete.

Stevie and her clubmate Hannah Weedall also helped Cheshire win a team gold medal for the first time in two decades.

Hannah, granddaughter of former Commonwealth Games runner Brian Hall, finished 12th, but was conceding a year to those who finished ahead of her.

Now Stevie and Hannah have both been selected to run for England in the World Schools Championship in Italy next month.

They still have the national schools event and possibly another international vest in the home internationals to come later this month.

Coach Shaun McGrath said: 'That the club should provide half the Cheshire winning team is fantastic, but that two of only six girls chosen to run in the world championships should come from Vale Royal is an amazing achievement.'

Other Vale Royal members running for Cheshire were Rebecca Cragie, Kathy Stringer, Hannah Paver, Robyn Ellis, Elizabeth Pegg, Andrew Clews, Richard Chadwick, Glen George, James Griffiths, Ryan Smith, Zach Cross and Andrew Perry. nVale Royal are promoting a cross-country race for all ages at Knight's Grange on Saturday (1pm). Entry is on the day and costs £2.
