TRIATHLON: The City of Chester Triathlon Club fielded two tough teams in the Pennine Bridleway Relay Race on Sunday.

The formidable event started in Rossendale where pairs of runners traversed the hills and valleys to Burnley, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Rochdale in a 47-mile loop, mainly off road, in five legs with a total of 6,300ft of ascent.

Chester's B Team, comprising Tony Fisher, Julian MacDonald, Peter Cobb, Bill Neave, Steve Eastwood, Anna Stamp and Julie Shalloe, battled valiantly against the disadvantage of having an incomplete team.

Tony and Julian ran two legs together with Dave Press, but still managed to complete the race in a very respectable time of seven hours, seven minutes and 13 seconds, coming 45th.

Chester's A team - Barry and Janet Frost, Nick Campbell and Nick Rose, Peter Timson and Chris Lees, Eric Corker and Dave Press, Stephen Spall and Phil Townsend - braved the dense fog and the gradients to come 52nd over the line in a time of 8:00.11.

In the Liverpool and District Cross Country Championships at Clarke Gardens, Chris Morgan led the Chester club's challenge. He came 79th and first was the over 55 veteran in a time of 41:16.

Michael and Jenny Lee put in two impressive performances in their first cross country outing for the club, coming over the line in 44:00 (102nd) and 51:35 (127th) respectively.
