ANGLING: FISHING at Winsford Flash was disrupted this week by the arrival of travellers, writes John Stubbs.

Veterans arriving at the Red Lion just about managed to park up because of caravans, lorries and dog kennels.

Arnold Sutton won the match on peg 195 with 13-10-0 of caster fish. Second was Peter Wakefield on peg 197 (11-10-0) and third was Eric Gillett on peg 203 (10-0-0). Stan Aston won the Red Lion section with 9-15-0 off peg 192, second was Len Clarke off peg 191 (7-14-0) and third was John Stubbs with 6-15-0 off peg 184. Gerald Littler scored 6-7-0 off peg 193 for fourth.

The result of the Winsford Wednesday Open was a cracker for Jimmy Young of Dave's of Middlewich, who drew peg 194 for the second time in three weeks and has now made it pay both times, this time taking perch to 2-14-0. The best was three for 6-15-0 plus six others at 1lb-1.5lb, making a total of 30-5-0 net including roach to 10oz. Ernie Ayers (Vale Royal) on peg 198 took roach to 12oz for 21-7-0, and Ray Thompson, also of Vale Royal, on peg 201 took a close third with 20-10-0. Sam Walton, Dave's of Middlewich, on peg 202 was a section winner with 15-12-0, while Alan Birchall (Barnton & Frodsham) in fifth scored 14-12-0 off peg 204.

Knight's Grange took to the marina last Saturday and made some good weights. Steve Flood split the Swift Brothers but Bernie Swift won the match with 21-4-0 off peg 200, with Flood second off peg 202 with 18-7-0. Pete Swift was next, off peg 196, with 15-7-0 and Royce Weedall took fourth spot with 14-3-0 off peg 198.

Northwich's Saturday open was won by John Ormerham (Newton-le-Willows) from peg 69 with 7-6-0, ahead of Billy Brierley (GTI Sports) from peg 44 who scored 6-7-0, and Mike Whitcroft of Bolton AC who recorded 5-10-0 from peg 82. There was a large turnout of 39 rods on the Willow Beds Stretch.

Northwich Winter League had even more - 50 rods. Newbridge turned up the top two weights with Ray Rigby (Gas Wide) taking 14-5-0 from peg 270 on the hemp and casting with the pole. Bob Evans (Protack-Barlows), from peg 272, used the same tactics to take 13-7-0 for second spot.

The next four places were taken at Hunts Lock. Steve Bielter (Lymm), peg two, was third with 13-5-0 of roach, Mark Higginson (Protack-Barlows) came third with 13-3-0, Wayne Percival of the Lion and Railway was fourth with 11-10-0 and Team Trafford's Keith Smith was fifth with 11-9-0.

Farmer's Arms AC took to the Bottom Flash with some good weights. Brent Pierpoint took the spoils with 23-6-0, and it was nice to see Terry Kettle back on the bank after his illness. He took second with 22-10-0 and Kenny Taylor (19-7-0) came third.

At Meadow Bank AC on Saturday, that man again, Ian Buckley, won the day with 9-14-0. Second was Steve Lakin who scored 7-8-0, John Lewis scored 6-12-0, Peter Beesley 6-5-8, Brian Bill 5-11-8 and Kenny Potts, 5-0-0, completed the top scoring.
