A FORMER Chester Queen’s School pupil has secured a place in the England women’s touch rugby squad.

Sarah Kelly, from Chester, was selected by England coaches in a 20-strong training squad.

The 19-year-old, who is now studying in Manchester, plays for both the North Wales touch rugby team, based in Wrexham, and the regional team, North West Warriors, based in Manchester.

Since being chosen to be a member of the England squad, Sarah, who will study environmental science in Southampton next year, has been travelling to London every fortnight to train with the rest of the team.

She said: “I am very proud of getting into the squad. I wasn’t expecting it at all especially as I was the youngest at the trials by a few years.

“They will be cutting the squad down to 16 in August for the Euros in Italy and it would be amazing if I made the cut.”

Touch rugby is a similar sport to traditional rugby. However, it involves no contact, so no tackling, rucks, mauls, lineouts or kicking, with the emphasis on speed and agility.
