ANGLING: The Rod 'n' Reel team's North Wales Winter League challenge was dealt a huge blow on Sunday after a below-par performance in their match on the River Weaver at Hartford.

Despite securing a creditable second place in the match they have now dropped to third place in the overall standings.

Lenny Bolton was their top rod of the day as he finished as the winner of his section after landing skimmers and roach to weigh 2-15-0, while Bernie Leatherbarrow took 2-8-0 and Mike Lewis 2-9-12.

There were full houses once again in the week's open matches at Lingmere Fishery.

Steve Openshaw won the Thursday match when his carp weighing 34-4-0 was too good for Alan Dewhurst with similar to weigh 28-8-0 and Lee Saville with 19-10-0.

In their Saturday match Dave Randles Senior came out on top with a carp-based 27-8-0, to finish ahead of Billy Gore with likewise for 25-14-0 and Tony Thompson with 17-10-0.

Willaston AC team finished the day in seventh place which still leaves them in seventh place overall in the Jack Purchase Winter League.

Sunday's match was on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Maghull, where Keith Wilson led Willaston's efforts by winning his section with roach and perch weighing 2-8-0. Support came from Tony Churchill with 1-1-0 of roach and Phil Cross on 1-5-4.

A visit to Dearnford Hall Trout Fishery at Whitchurch proved worthwhile for Ellesmere Port's Kevin Holcroft. It brought him a 4-0-0 brownie which he took to a sunken daddy longlegs.

Victory went to Peter Cooke in the Lobol AC match on their Priory Pool. With roach and skimmers, his 3-2-0 beat Sid Robinson and Dennis Brown both with ide and roach to weigh 2-14-0.

Despite a temperamental River Weaver, Andy Walsh managed a roach catch to weigh 6-7-0 in the Wirral Borough Council AC match on the Red Lion length.

Mark Greasley followed with roach to weigh 6-2-0 as did Rick Keeley finishing on 6-1-0.
