FENCING: FENCING ace Thomas Mottershead has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Junior World Championships in South Korea next month, writes Natalie Moses.

The Crewe-born 16-year-old, whose mum Pamela works at Leighton Hospital, has wowed selectors with stunning performances in competitions across the world.

Over the last few months he has travelled to Hungary, Germany, France and Italy. In February he notched silver at the British U18

Youth Championships at Stoke, and he won gold in March while representing England in the Home Internationals in Edinburgh.

Now Thomas, who trains four nights a week, is among the medal hopes in the U21 Cadet Sabre class in Taebaek City between April 8-17, which will be screened live on Sky Sports.

Coach James Williams, a three-time Olympian who is regarded as Great Britain's most successful

Sabre fencer of the modern era, believes he is a real hope for the London Olympics in 2012.

James attended Wybunbury Delves Primary School with his sister Rebekah, 13, until the family moved as dad Richard left Rolls- Royce to become a minister near Stockport.

The cost of equipment, travel and training is £5,000, and any sponsorship help would be gratefully received. Call the Chronicle sportsdesk on 01270 502437 for details.
