TENNIS ace Jordan McCulloch left school aged 14 to pursue his sporting career – and is now making the grade in his sport and his studies.

The 20-year-old from Little Sutton is the Cheshire champion and remains unbeaten as captain of the University of Stirling first team, who sit top of the British Universities and Colleges Sport Tennis Premier North League.

Now impressing in his third year of a sports studies degree, McCulloch has been selected for a scholarship from The Taylor Family Foundation, a trust which supports young people across the UK in education, health, recreation and the performing arts.

McCulloch said: “I still have goals in tennis and the support will give me the funds to try and achieve a world ranking point, competing in ITF Futures events across Great Britain and abroad too.”

McCulloch, a talented footballer who played for Liverpool FC as a teenager, left Whitby High School at the age of 14 to take up tennis full-time.

He continued to study for his GCSEs but it wasn’t until he was spotted playing in a tournament in Glasgow that he was given the chance to attend the University of Stirling.

Jordan said: “I’d been totally focused on tennis and didn’t have the grades, so I completed a bridging course to get onto the degree.

“Coming to Stirling has proven to be a great choice as I am still playing lots of tennis and there is a better balance to my life with time to work on my studies.”
