TENNIS sensation Eden Richardson made the semi-finals in the under 12s doubles for Great Britain in the BNP Paribas European Open in Boulonge after narrowly missing out on an individual quarter-final berth.

Stanney Oaks resident Richardson, 11, received her first ever GB call-up just before Christmas.

The British number three flew out over the festive period despite the travel chaos caused by the weather.

After receiving a first-round bye in the singles, Richardson faced Belarussian Vera Lapko.

Richardson won the opening set 6-3 with Lapko coming back to win the second 6-3.

With the match finely balanced, Lapko then pulled out while 2-0 down in the deciding set to send Richardson through.

Next up was Italian Cecilia Castelli.

With a quarter final tie against eventual tournament winner, Romania’s Iulia Maria Ivascu, within sight, Richardson couldn’t get the measure of her third round opponent.

Castelli won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Richardson then teamed up with Alexandra Herd in the doubles.

They saw off the Russian pairing of Gutova and Bryzgalova and French duo Phaysouphanh and Galibert, both in straight sets, before losing out to eventual winners Cristian and Ivascu of Romania 6-3, 6-2.
