ATHLETICS: TWO West Cheshire AC juniors raced to places in the frame at the weekend.

Emma-Leigh Heighway and Kerry Riley negotiated testing cross country courses at two venues.

Emma-Leigh lined up at Boggart Hole Clough, Greater Manchester, and finished third overall in the under-17 age group at the final round of the North West Women's League fixture.

The Bishops High School pupil finished seventh in the U17 race which was incorporated into the senior ladies event, and she finished 51st overall in the field of starters.

Kerry competed in West Cheshire AC colours at the final round of the North Staffordshire League, which took place at Leek.

The U13 member finished second in her race, just three places clear of club colleague, Rebecca Grimes, who secured fifth position.

Tom Lowndes was another West Cheshire AC member in action at Leek, where he secured 12th position after battling through the tough wintry conditions.

All the junior distance-running race aces from West Cheshire AC are scheduled to continue their fine form this Saturday when the second round of the club's open junior cross country races take place at Whitby Park, (10am start, first race).

Kerry Riley won the U13 girls race in the first round staged a fortnight ago, and Rebecca Grimes grabbed third spot.

Thomas Lowndes collected top spot in the U13 boys age group.

The trio are expected to be joined by Danielle Bentley and Gemma Mayled who finished second and third respectively in the U11 girls first round race.

James Ellis will be attempting to continue his good form by again winning the U11 boys event.

Callum Freeman, of West Cheshire AC, who finished third in the U13 boys race, Thomas Justice, second in the U15 boys and third-placed U15 girl, Kelly Money, are other West Cheshire AC members keen to enjoy a slice of success again. FIVE West Cheshire AC seniors competed at the final round of the Liverpool and District Cross Country League on Saturday at Stadt Moores Park.

Dave Alexander spearheaded the club's charge after finishing ninth in a time of 30 minutes 25 seconds.

Andy Clague was 36th in 32:28; Clive Giddis was 74th in 37:03; and Alan Cooper posted 97th spot for a time of 39:31.

Phil McGlory of Liverpool Harriers won the race in 28:11, and helped his team win the team event on 149 points, from Wirral AC in second spot on 322; and St Helens Sutton, third with 588. West Cheshire AC finished sixth overall on 1007 points. WEST CHESHIRE AC'S men will be targeting a hat-trick of team successes when they head for Tattenhall on Sunday.

The purple-vested squad are heading for the third round of the Borders Road Running League after securing team victories at the opening two rounds.

West Cheshire AC, with Ken Begley at the helm, are scheduled to charge into action when the runners come under orders at 11am.
