GREAT Britain water polo captain Fran Leighton has been giving safety advice to Ellesmere Port schoolchildren at the EPIC leisure centre.

The Rotherham-born Commonwealth Games bronze medallist came to the EPIC to promote the Amateur Swimming Association/Royal Life Saving Society’s Get Safe 4 Summer campaign.

The 26-year-old gave the pupils tips on resuscitation, reach rescues and life-saving skills. Around 60 youngsters attended the course.

“I have spent a large part of my life in the water and I know how much fun swimming and aquatic games can be if done properly,” said Leighton.

“The problem is that when the hot summer weather gets here, it is tempting to take a dip or play in places such as rivers or lakes which may not be as safe, so it is important that children know how to assess the dangers.”
