VALE Royal AC's Stevie Stockton sprung a major surprise in the North Staffs Cross Country League at Leek on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Sir John Deane's College student won the senior women's race beating City of Stoke star runner Michelle Ross into second place.
It is rare for a junior to win a senior race but Stockton got the better of Ross over the final mile after the two went head-to-head over the first three miles.
Stockton clocked 21 mins 45 secs and her junior club-mate Charlotte Road was fourth of the 69 starters in an impressive 23.43.
Stockton is now looking forward to the New Year starting with the Cheshire Cross Country Championships at Knight's Grange in January, the North of England Championships later the same month and the National Championships in March.
Vale Royal's Colin Rath-bone was 136th of 179 in 54.16 in the senior men's race.
Vale Royal staged their own informal cross-country races at Knight's Grange on Saturday.
