ROWING: Grosvenor Rowing Club is celebrating after taking home a clutch of winners' medals from the Agecroft Small Boats Head event.

Hayley McElhouse recorded a time of 14:43.00, ahead of four other competitors, to win the women's novice sculler class.

Sara Coey and Fiona Claymore recorded a time of 13:33.24, beating off competition from three other entries to clinch the women's senior III double title.

There was also success for the club's veteran C coxed-four comprising Jeremy Lush, Ad Gideonse, Tony Churchill and Mike Allwood, coxed by Sarah Armstrong. They completed the event in 11:22.03, ahead of three other crews in their class.

The Agecroft Small Boats Head is a relatively new rowing event, taking place on the River Irwell. The 3.5km course begins at the Victoria and Albert Hotel in Manchester city centre and finishes at the Lowry, Salford Quays.

The club's new membership year has now begun and anyone can join regardless of age and rowing ability. Anyone who is interested should contact 01244 311231, e-mail info@grosvenor-rowingclub.org.uk or come down to the club itself, on the Groves in Chester, on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 7pm or at 10am at weekends.

Queen's Park High School Rowing Club also competed in Manchester in a long distance head race.

In a crowded entry of the J14 single sculls, Chris Thomas powered into first place.

In the WJ14 double sculls newly-combined Kate Pilling and Amy Jones won their division and the successful doubles combination of Chris Thomas and Joe Rowlands in the J14 double sculls took first place.

In a strongly contested final race the WJ14 girls quad with Bridie Collin, Amy Jones, Kate Pilling, Alice Walton and coxed by Molly OBrien-Manley rowed magnificently past their opposition and beat WJ15 crews.
