ATHLETICS: OUR Lady's boys and St Werburgh's girls celebrated cross-country successes in the district primary schools' championships at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School.

The girls' race, boasting 84 competitors, was won by St Saviour's pupil Libby Ward, beating Marie McKeown (St Winefride's) and Alice Jennings (St Werburgh's).

The St Werburgh's quartet of Katy McKay, Ruth McCallum, Clare Strain and Marie McKeown secured the team title on 44 points.

Simon Flavell from Childer Thornton celebrated success in the boys' race which attracted 78 starters, beating Damian Schumacher from Our Lady's into second spot while Adam Howell of Thomas Wedge was third.

Our Lady's clinched the boys' team title on 33 points with a squad of Damian Schumacher, Kieran McGinley, Jack Belsten and Jake Sass.

A team of 11 Ellesmere Port Running Club members headed to More-cambe on Sunday to compete in the Trimpell 20-mile race, with most runners using it as a progress check for next month's London Marathon.

First home for EPRC was Tony Hy-land who tackled the course in 2:09.16 for 15th position.

He was followed by Paul Robertson (2:11.01) in 18th position and second in the Over 40s category.

Nicky Bird was first lady across the line in 2:14.41 while other EPRC finishers were:

Matt Whitfield (37th in 2:14.49); Dave Winder (41st in 2:16.32); Steve Blaylock (112th in 2:34.31); Alan Durston (148th in 2:43.16); Paul Pinkham (153rd in 2:43.42); Amanda Penfold (3:00.32); Tracey Lewis-Jones (260th in 3:07.02) and Brian Treadwell (261st in 3:07.33).

Two EPRC members took part among a 5,000-strong field in the Wilmslow Half Marathon on Sunday, with Simon Jeffs securing 129th position in 1:24.55 and Dave Nalder finishing in 1:31.02 for 331st place.

Fixtures this weekend include The Good Friday Four-Miles Races at Southport and a Salford 10k Road Race, also on Friday.

The Halton Five-Miles Road Race gets under way at Runcorn on Sunday (9.30am) and the Air Products 10k Road Race takes place at Crewe on Sunday (10.30am).

Meanwhile, Trafford's Longford Park track will be the setting for an open track and field medal event on Easter Monday (1pm).
