UNIVERSITY SPORT: THE British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) leagues are finally beginning to take shape after the first three weeks of the season.

Teams from Crewe and Alsager's Manchester Metropolitan University are beginning to find their feet in a variety of sports.

The rugby league side faced unknown opponents NEWI of Wrexham, and the game was just a few minutes old when it became apparent the South Cheshire outfit were about to have their day.

Captain and veteran payer John Lenton ran over the first of his four tries of the afternoon within two minutes, and Hugh Black ran in three of his own to make it a 66-6 win.

The rugby union team failed to emulate their rugby league counterparts, only managing a 13-13 draw at Central Lancs, while the second team went down 17-10 at Bangor.

The women's rugby side got their first points of the season in a surprising but well fought-out victory against the much bigger Birmingham University.

In ladies' hockey, Cheshire MMU continued their fantastic start to the season, winning 14-0 for the second week in succession, NEWI on the receiving end.

The other hockey teams failed to deliver points, the ladies losing 2-0 and the men's sides defeated 2-0 and 4-0.

In football, MMU Cheshire travelled to Loughborough - and the men's and ladies' first teams came back with their tails between their legs.

The Men, already reeling from a 5-3 defeat to Leeds Met, were thrashed 6-0 - leaving them rock bottom of the league with just one point.

The ladies faired little better, losing 5-0 to a strong Loughborough team.

The Men's third and fourth teams salvaged some pride, beating Central Lancs and Keel 2-1 and 3-2 respectively.

The netball first team pipped Edge Hill 43-40, while the undefeated seconds added to their points total by beating Manchester 24-19.

In volleyball, the men's team travelled and came back 3-0 winners against Leeds.

The ladies also won 3-0 at UMIST.
