ATHLETICS: ST ANSELM'S have again made it through to the finals of the English Schools Cup, with both their Junior and Inter Boys teams winning the North West regional round.

Also qualifying were Caldy who were sixth in the Junior Boys competition and fifth in the Inter Boys.

In the Junior Boys' event, St Anselm's total of 44 points was nine ahead of second placed West Hill High School from Stalybridge. Manchester Grammar were third.

The Saints team was led home by Patrick McKeown in fourth. Steven Duckers was sixth with Joseff Forester 16th and Huw Shimmin 18th.

In support were Joe Gledhill in 29th and Chris Williams 46th.

The Inter Boys team finished with 38 points, seven ahead of Manchester Grammar who were second this time with Kendal Grammar third.

Good packing was the key with Adam Williamson in fifth, Tom Madden ninth, Matthew Hughes 11th and Paul Ry 13th.

The national final will be held at Middlesbrough at the beginning of December.

Meanwhile Calday's Ben Jones won the Merseyside Boys Cross Country league at Clarke Gardens In Liverpool. Adam Peers was another Wirral winner, taking first place in the under 16s race and leading St Anselm's in the team race.

The second round of the girls race saw Upton's Katie Sullivan finish third in the seniors.
