CHESTER emerged with a win and a defeat to their name from matches against Preston and runaway league leaders Prestbury.

In the home fixture against Preston, Chester came from 2-1 down to triumph 3-2.

Jez Westwell put up a brave performance against Darren Vescovi, who had enough deception to wear his opponent down to put Preston 1-0 up.

Jonathan Clark managed to level for Chester by beating Preston’s Howard Nuttall, but Mike Waight went down 3-1 to Keith Thomason.

It was left to Chester’s top two strings to secure the points. Nick Taylor defeated Preston’s Greg Laidler 3-1, while Steve Coppinger was in scintillating form against Preston professional Dave Barnett, winning 3-0.

Chester’s match at Prestbury had an altogether different outcome as the hosts won 5-0.

Geoff Barker failed to trouble the scorer, being completely wiped out by Prestbury’s Danny Massaro. Westwell had moments of magic against Scottish champion and world top 100 player Stuart Crawford, but was unable to stem the tartan tide and went down in three hard- fought games.

Waight also found it tough going against Prestbury’s Steve Siveter, but Chester captain Clark at least managed to get a point on the board against up and coming junior international Eddie Charlton.

With three games left, Chester are in fourth place.
