ELLESMERE Port and Neston Special Olympics are holding their second awards evening tomorrow at the Civic Hall.

The aim of the event is to showcase the development of Special Olympics athletes as they work towards the Special Olympics National Games in Leicester this month.

The event is also an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the athletes in various sports including boccia, 10-pin bowling, football, netball and tennis.

Fundraising has been high on the agenda for the group, who rely on donations to be able to offer subsidised support to athletes in their chosen sport.

Sarah Parry, community development officer, said: “We are looking forward to the event and the opportunity to award the athletes for their successes over the past 12 month. We are really lucky to have such a dedicated team of coaches and volunteers to support the athletes in their training.”

The Ellesmere Port and Neston Special Olympics group was set up three years ago with the aim of providing training and competition in a variety of sports for people with a learning disability, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate achievement, experience enjoyment and participate with other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

The committee would welcome new members. If you are interested in finding out more about the Special Olympics, please contact Sarah Parry on 0151 356 6782 or e-mail sarah.parry@epnbc.gov.uk
