CONSERVATIVE A suffered a shock exit from the CD McAllister Cup at the hands of giant-killers Broughton Wings.

Currently sitting second in the Riley’s Division, Cons were at home to Wings, who sit at the summit of the lower Olympic Trophies Division.

But in the handicap competition, Wings were given a start of 84 – and never looked like giving it up.

Mark Jarvis got Cons off to a good start, overcoming youngster Jonathon McMahon, and Eddie Jenkins beat Alan Taylor comfortably but Daroch Mackie got the better of Steve Williams to maintain Wings’ healthy lead.

Bryn Hughes then defeated Brian Morgan on the black, leaving Neal Jones and Andy Duckers to try to make up the difference of 81 for Cons.

But Wings were determined and although Jones dragged the difference down to 13 points, G Yard beat Duckers by 29 to send Wings through by 42.

League champions Christleton – last year’s McAllister Cup runners-up – went out at the first hurdle to old adversaries St Saviour’s B.

In a good opening frame, Shawn McDonnell fought out a tie with Paul Ellis. Andy Mumford defeated George Brady and Steve Mountain won by 57 points to put Saints in front by 47.

Wayne Amey took a good lead against Paul Hughes, who never gave up and lost by only 21 points. Neil Cardus was beaten by Kevin Maxwell by 15 points which gave Saviours a lead of 41 points.

In the final frame, Saviours’ former pro Alex Ferguson hit a 49 break on the way to victory over Finn Gallagher to see his side home by a comfortable margin of 119 points.

In other ties, Chester Bus went through against United Services and Snooker Centre overcame Liberal A.

In the Chester Challenge Cup match between Conservative C and Liberal B, everybody had a late night as play finished at 10.50pm.

Liberal took a three-frame lead with Anthony Leyland beating George Lofthouse, Dave Ankers defeating Ian Cain and Peter Beswick seeing off Tom Donnelly. John Wells then pulled one back for Cons by winning over Liberal’s Tom Horne.

Kevin Harris then accounted for Lew Williams and Dave Burns just got the better of Gareth Crebbin to tie the match.

But the fightback by Cons was in vain as Liberal won on the number of points scored by just 21.

Christleton A moved into the next round by beating Upton RBL A. Upton gave a four-point start to Christleton and in a close black ball game Barry Charker beat Glen Sheil by five points.

Mike Craig must have thought his side was in trouble when he fell to Glen Morley by 64 points to give Upton a 53-point lead, but Dave Done beat Chris Bennion by 39 to bring Upton’s lead down.

John Mooney put Christleton in front again with a 36-point win over A Sutton. Matty Done beat Upton’s John Over in a very tight game and Kirk Shone put Christleton through to the next round.
