ANGLING: FRANK Slater won the last match and the series title of Rudheath-Bowling Green's Winsford Flash competition, writes JOHN STUBBS.

He drew peg seven and beat off the challenge from Trevor Jones 8-8-0 and Kev Simpson 7-4-0.

Slater had a healthy lead overall, 49pts to the 41 accrued by Keith Young and 40 by Jimmy Young.

By the weekend, pegs in the 30s were proving the best.

They featured prominently in Saturday's Open and Rudheath GG's Sunday match.

Saturday's result: Craig Fawley (peg 36) 37-4-0, Dave Mellor (35) 37-0-0, Vinnie Martin (34) 33-12-0 and Kev Clarke 16-5-0.

Sunday's match: Kev Simpson (35) 29-6-0 of skimmers and bream, Jimmy Young (36) 28-14-0, Anthony King 20-14-0, Frank Slater 16-12-0, Phil Murphy 15-8- 0, Keith Smith 15-6-0.

Winsford Veterans' last match at Border Fisheries was won by Ian Allcock with 26-8-0, from Eric Moore 18-10-0, Ted Walsh and Jimmy Garston, both 17-8-0, and section winners were Ted Isher-wood 15-10-0, Sam Walton 13-6-0, Len Clarke 10-9-0 and Stan Aston 8-10-0.

Top prize for the best eight from 14 results went to Isherwood, followed by Ian Shaw, Allcock, Moore, Lionel Sheene and Walton.

The River Weaver's first North-wich Opens attracted 34 and 27 rods respectively over the weekend and weights were only moderate overall.

Dave Brooks (Maver Barnsley) was the easy Saturday winner with bream and skimmers worth 17-9-0. Shaun Matthews (Warrington) 8-8-0, Mark Liptrot (Bolton

AC) 7-10-0 and Robbie Meggs (Dave's of Middlewich) 7-8-0 followed.

Andy Hamlett (Vale Royal) with 8-10-0 was the best local rod on Sunday, when the three before him were Paul Hughes (Saints) 19-15-0 of bream on feeder, Mark Webb (Saints) 15-2-0 and Wayne Percival (Rod & Reel) 9-12-0.

Craig Brewin included a 4lb 3oz bream in his catch of 12-5-0, to win the Secretary's Cup at Barnton-Frodsham AC's Heesom Pool on Sunday. He also had skimmer, roach and perch all on pole-fished red maggot at 6m. Bob Norris 11-4-0, Andy Middleton 8-3-4 and Doug Haspell 9-11-0 were placed.

Early-season junior series, 1st round, Friday, junior cistern: 8/12s Stephen Finney 3-8-0, Michael Moore 1-8-0; 13/16s Daniel Ash-brook 10-9-0, Daniel Moore 8-3-4 and Tom Woods 3-7-0.

Ladies summer series first round, Eden's Pool: Barbara Leicester 2-4-0, Lyn Morrison 0-8-0 and Sheila Strong 0-4-8.
