ATHLETICS: GREAT Sutton track star Emma-Leigh Heighway secured a silver medal in the U20s 1500m race in the North of England Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

The 17-year-old Sale Harrier, who is a sixth-form student at Neston High School, is now looking forward to the English Schools' Cross Country Championships and hopes to return to the AAAs this summer after qualifying in the 800m for the past three years.

Eight members of West Cheshire AC completed the North of England Cross Country Championships at Berry Park, Consett, County Durham.

Times were - Georgina Wright, 28th in 12:40 (3k U13 girls); Rebecca Grimes, 30th in 16:24 (4k U15 girls); Charlotte Roach, 39th in 20:59 (4.5k U17 ladies); Graham MacNeil, 171st in 47:40; Paul Frodsham, 224th in 49:10; Andrew Clague, 229th in 49:19; Ken Begley, 266th in 50:32; Gary Munslow, 279th in 50:58 (all in 12k men's).

West Cheshire AC staged its annual presentation evening at the EPIC Leisure Centre on Friday night.

Rachel Stoakley collected the Female Athlete of the Year Cup and James Callaghan was presented with the Male Athlete of the Year Cup.

Age group winners on the night included Michael Haynes (U11 boys); Danielle Erskine (U11 girls); Michael Lyness (U13 boys); Georgina Wright (U13 girls); Matthew Kenny (U15 boys); Siân Kelman and Stephanie Owens (U15 girls); Carl Van Schie (U17 youths); and Charlotte Roach (U17 ladies).

Richard Stocker won the senior men's award and Sharon Bell won the senior ladies prize. Meanwhile, Gary Roberts was named veteran men's winner and Jules Bancroft won the veteran ladies prize.

Fixtures this weekend include the Cheshire County Schools' Cross Country Championships, at Reaseheath College, near Nantwich, on Saturday, and the North West Regional Sportshall Championships, on Saturday, at Robin Park, Wigan, for U13s and U15s.

WCAC's road runners will be heading for Abergele on Sunday for the next round of the Borders Road Running League.
