A GAP of only two seconds denied one West Cheshire AC runner victory in the second round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League.
Young distance-running ace Liam Renton finished second in the under 13 boys race at Boggart Hole Clough with a time of 12 minutes 43 seconds.
He was supported by clubmates Ryan Jones (17th, 14:46) and Connor Pritchard (26th, 17:14) as the trio clinched fifth spot in the team competition.
Alec Beaney secured second place in the under 20 junior men’s age group and 13th overall in the senior men’s event.
He finished with a time of 38 minutes 10 seconds, ahead of Louis Humphreys (fifth junior and 69th overall, 42:15) and Alan Littler (10th junior and 165th overall, 49:07).
Alec, Louis and Alan secured top spot for West Cheshire in the under 20 junior team competition, and West Cheshire were 18th in the men’s team event.
Dave Alexander posted a time of 37 minutes six seconds finishing 18th in the men’s race at the North Staffs Cross Country League second round, staged at Stafford Common.
West Cheshire AC will host the second round of the Chester and Ellesmere Port Schools’ Cross Country Race Series at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, on Saturday (10am start) for pupils in Years 4-7.
Other fixtures this weekend include the Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meeting, at Sheffield, on Saturday (noon start) and the third round of the North Wales Cross Country League, at Treborth Playing Field, Bangor, on Saturday (2pm start).
Eight juniors will also represent Cheshire at the Arriva North West Fun In Athletics Competition at Sport City, Manchester on Sunday.
