WEST Cheshire AC’s youngsters have kicked off the cross-country season on a winning note.

Sonny Dean (eight minutes and 28 seconds) finished first and Paul Morrison (8:36) second in the under-11 boys race at the opening round of the North Staffs Cross Country League at Winsford. They were backed up by Sion Roberts (fifth in 8:57), Theo Challinor (35th in 10:26) and Charlie Cooke (50th in 11:58) to earn Wests top spot in the team competition.

Cameron Weaver (21:04) won the U15s boys crown while there were fourth-placed finishes for Evan Roberts (17:12) and Tamsin O’Keefe (9:27) in the U13s boys and U11s girls races respectively.

Wests finished third in the U13s girls team standings thanks to Sophie Hemingbrough (11th in 9:06), Issy Clarke (15th in 9:11), Hannah Bissell (25th in 9:49), Rebecca Rees (28th in 10:02), Beth McMahon (31st in 10:17), Sophie O’Kines (34th in 10:41) and Charlotte Lukins (48th in 11:25).

West Cheshire AC members were out in force at the Sandstone Trail Races.

Andrew Clague finished 17th in the 17.1-mile A race from Duckington to Delamere Forest in a time of two hours, 14 minutes and 36 seconds. He was followed by clubmates Tim Munslow (76th in 2.37:33), Richard Batterham (106th in 2.47:58) and Ellie Robinson (124th in 2.54:57).

Paul Frodsham (11th in 1.21:41), Craig Richardson (37th in 1.33:58), Lisa Davies (51st in 1.39:19) and Jane Pickering (70th in 1.43:22) represented Wests in the 10.6-mile B race between Beeston and Delamere Forest.

Clague had finished 32nd in 28:50 in the final race in the Wirral Multi-Terrain series at Arrow Park.

Mark Davies (43rd in 29:20), Russell Kirk (49th in 29:49), Joe Foy (85th in 32:19), Batterham (108th in 34:44), Jim Jones (109th in 34:51), Bob Benson (114th in 35:13) and Tony Kennedy (116th in 35:23) followed up.

Mark Povey completed the Hoylake 10k in 46:30.

And in athletics, Emily Ball won the under 15s girls shot title at Wrexham AC’s ‘Final Fling’ event with a pb throw of 11.79m.
