A PROJECT manager from Neston is preparing for his toughest assignment to date – the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Run.
Unilever employee Guy Thompson, 49, has been a runner all his life and has tackled endurance events like the London Marathon in the past, but on April 18 he will face a challenge like nothing he has ever attempted before.
The 18km run takes place in Germany and is unlike other distance runs in that it features 32 obstacles, from water traps and quicksand to climbing walls and hurdles.
Thompson is part of a Great Britain team that will challenge for the crown of toughest nation in the world at the race, no mean feat when only two-thirds of last year’s entrants completed the course.
To ready himself for the challenge, Thompson has enlisted the help of a former RAF physical training instructor to cope with whatever the course will throw at him.
“I have always enjoyed running,” he said. “It is a sport you can do anywhere, in any city in the world.
“I have never joined an athletics club because of the travelling my job entails, but I have always trained for endurance running, going up the coast to Thurstaston regularly when I’m home.
“But for this I have also included some running up Moel Famau in North Wales. It’s just about preparing your body for anything because the Strongman Run tests you in many different ways.
“I love taking part in adventure races, and I’m really up for this race. I’m a little concerned about the freezing water, but determined to get through it.”
Thompson and his Team GB teammates will be led by Chris Gibson.
Gibson finished last year’s Strongman Run with the 401st-placed Team Impex in a time of 3hrs 4min 14sec. The race was won by German Knut Höhler and his team in a time of 1:33.54, and this year Gibson is hoping to close in on that time with the help of Thompson.
“This year the course is going to be more exhausting and harder than ever,” he said. “This is not just about physical fitness, it’s about competitors who have real strength of mind and character.
“We are delighted to have Guy representing Team GB. He has all the experience and qualities to be a true strongman!”
