HOCKEY: COUNTY hockey's perennial strugglers are celebrating title success.

Already assured of promotion to Cheshire Women's League Division Three, Runcorn Ladies clinched the Division Four championship with a 1-0 win over Warrington at Brookvale Recreation Centre.

Cheered on by a record crowd, they won the title by six points as nearest rivals, Chester & District suffered a shock defeat by basement battlers Winnington Park.

Runcorn captain Lisa Janion said: 'We have been fighting relegation in Division Four for many seasons.

'This miraculous turnaround has led to a very exciting season for everyone.'

Team-mate Kate Wozniak said: 'Winning ten out of 12 matches is a fantastic result for any team in any sport.

'But knowing that we beat Chester, Didsbury and Neston in the process just makes it all the sweeter.'

The team have hit 116 goals this season in all matches with Sue Allen scoring a half-century.
