Sefton 32Ellesmere Port 16

THE Oilers had their relegation confirmed on Saturday with defeat in Liverpool.

The away loss to Sefton ended Port’s hopes of remaining in South Lancs/Cheshire Two, just a year after they gained promotion.

Club official Mark Davies is already looking to the future.

He said: “We can now start planning in earnest for next season.

“It will be a chance to grow the club squad and blood some more inexperienced players in league games. But it will need a commitment by a bigger squad to training more regularly.”

Port’s team on Saturday was depleted by injuries and work commitments.

Despite being under strength, they started brightly and raced into a 10-0 lead with a try from Dan Rowett and a conversion and penalty from Paul Millington.

Before half time, Port added a further two penalties but Sefton hit back with a try and two penalties.

The Oilers led 16-11 at the break but Sefton found another gear for the final 30 minutes and took command, adding three converted tries.

Davies added: “With the second XV poised to enter the very competitive University of Salford leagues, and the third XV taking a spot in the Wirral Merit Table, all players will be playing more competitive fixtures next season.”

Ellesmere Port play host to mid-table Dukinfield at Whitby Sports and Social Club this Saturday.
