St Edward’s OB 43 Ellesmere Port 0

PORT fought hard to keep the score down on Saturday when they faced a St Edward’s side destined for promotion from South Lancs/Cheshire Three.

Dave Layder’s men would have lost by a greater margin had it not been for the forwards, who kept ball well and were strong in the lineouts.

Despite the final scoreline – and the fact Port are now bottom of the table – coach Dave Layder reckons his team have what it takes to survive the drop.

He said: “Saints were younger, fitter stronger and faster and it showed.

“We did what we had to and the lads did well. It was only 12-0 at half time and for about 15 minutes after half time we stopped them from scoring.”

Dan Norcross, Dan Perryman and Steve Jeffries all stood out for Port, but Saints took advantage once the visitors tired.

“We have some winnable games coming up,” said Layder. “The top sides are the top sides but those around us, Mossley Hill, Parkonians, even Newton, who are safe now, are all having mixed fortunes and we face them all in the coming weeks. I am confident we can climb the league.”
