ELLESMERE Port Rugby Club’s bid to get more girls into the game is going from strength to strength.

Port welcomed more than 60 girls from Whitby High School, Neston High School and the University Church of England Academy to their Whitby Sports & Social Club home for an afternoon of rugby led by club and RFU community coaches.

The girls were taught basic skills like scrumming and tackling and none were bothered by the wet conditions and the mud.

The day ended with games of contact rugby in which it was clear that the girls had taken on board what they had been taught.

All those who attended were then invited to return to the club two days later.

Port coaches were thrilled when a number turned up to train alongside girls who have been training at the club since the beginning of the year.

Port hope to have two full girls teams up and running by next season.

Girls in school years 6-10 who would like to take up rugby at the club can contact Andy on 07783 508789.

Ellesmere Port’s first team saw their South Lancs/Cheshire Division Three clash at home to Parkonians on Saturday snowed off.

Port’s next scheduled match is away to Port Sunlight on April 6.
