A RESURGENT Ellesmere Port ended the season on a high with a 19-13 win over Holmes Chapel.

Following a week break, the Port were targeting all the points in their final outing of the South Lancs/Cheshire Three league season and, despite falling behind, they showed great spirit to fight back .

Ellesmere Port head coach Dave Layder said: “We were hoping to end the season with a win and even though Holmes Chapel were a few places higher than us in the league, we had high hopes.

“We played by far and away the better rugby. We made a few handling errors in the first half which led to them scoring the first try with a good run. But we enjoyed more possession and we knew going into the second half that we could still win.”

Layder added: “In the opening minutes we secured a fantastic try. Our two second rowers combined brilliantly. We gave away a penalty and, with about 20 minutes to go, had a player sent to the sin bin. Good play saw the ball moved to the left, we made 50 yards and went over to make it 13-12. We got our third try following an excellent break and we held on.”

Ellesmere Port finished the season in ninth place with six wins.

Layder said: “With the same group of players, and with a little more hard work, I am confident we can finish in the top half next season.”
