Ellesmere Port 35 Linley 0

THE in-form Oilers made it five wins in a row on Saturday.

Linley, who are rooted to the foot of the South Lancs/Cheshire Three table, did not even manage to score a single point against the Port, who are up to third.

The hosts started brightly but had to wait 14 minutes before opening the scoring, prop James Callaghan breaking through. Fly-half Chris Carbutt kicked the conversion to make it 7-0.

Winger Rob Finlay scored the game’s second try four minutes later, crossing the whitewash with an opportunist score after the Linley defence fell asleep, following a kick by Carbutt. The Oilers’ fly-half added the extras to make it 14-0.

Port continued to exert plenty of pressure on the opposition line but failed to score until just before the break. Winger Craig Jones took the ball cleanly in the line and broke several tackles before touching down under the posts.

Carbutt’s conversion made it 21-0 at half-time.

Port’s fourth try of the afternoon – enough to secure a bonus point – arrived shortly after the restart.

Centre Lee Craddock too the ball at speed and burst through the Linley defence to score close to the posts, allowing Carbutt to maintain his 100% record with conversions.

With the result assured, Port began to ring the changes and rotate their squad.

Linley also began to play with more spirit, restricting the Oilers to just one more try.

It came with just three minutes to go.

The ball was spun along the back line and winger Jones crossed the whitewash on the right.

Carbutt’s fifth conversion of the day made it 35-0.

The Rees Development man of the match award went to centre Lee Craddock.

On Saturday, the Oilers are away to Liverpool University.

Ellesmere Port 2nds had a good win away at Anselmians in Eastham on Saturday.
