SQUASH: CHESTER Rugby Club's squash first team saw their recent good run ended against one of the league's front-runners, Grove Park.

Again, it was Chester's lower end that almost pulled them through.

Following a serious injury when he snapped his Achilles tendon, Drew Williams made his Chester debut. In a clinical display, Williams showed he had made a full recovery from the injury with a scintillating display to overwhelm Abbas Jamaid 3-0 and put Chester 1-0 up.

In what turned out to be the crucial tie of the night, Michael Waight, having travelled from London University, got off to a flyer and led 2-1. Unfortunately, his long trip caught up with him and he lost 3-2.

Chester captain Jonathan Clark continued his winning ways with a 3-0 victory against Cheshire County player Liam Foster, to put Chester back in the lead.

Chester's professional David Campion should have been favourite against Yawar Abbas but, carrying a slight injury which hampered his ability, he went down in three tight games.

The Women's World Champion, Sarah Fitzgerald, gave her all against Irish International Patrick Foster. But his extra strength paid dividends as he edged through to give the match to Grove Park 3-2.

A reversal of fortunes this week for the Dragons first team.

Colin Elson, who won so comfortably the previous week, lost equally comfortably 3-0, whereas Chris van Wyk turned around a bad defeat, showing something of a return to form to beat Dragons old boy Ian Riley 3-0, to level the match.

Steve Whittam, who looked rusty after an injury lay-off, lost the first game but was much more 'well-oiled' in winning the second. He was to run out of steam, however, eventually losing 3-1.

Up next to attempt to save the match was Giles Cook, who showed a welcome return to form in winning 3-1 and playing much better than his dismal defeat of the previous week, levelling the match 2-2.

Skipper Brian Meehan was last on to yet again try and pull a victory out of the hat. The first game was close but Meehan made a couple of crucial errors, eventually going down 3-0. Dragons 2nds lost 4-1 at Whitby. The 3rds had no game.
