ATHLETICS: VALE Royal's women moved a few pacey strides nearer taking the North Staffs Cross-Country League Second Division title on Saturday.

On Stafford common they maintained their overall advantage, which they take into the final fixture on December 6.

With an average age of just 22, the Vale Royal team was led by Olivia Renshaw, who was fifth, Helen Fowles, Caroline Winder, Nicky Archer, Siobhan Tarbuck and Val Kinvig.

Vale Royal Girls also maintained their good form in the Under 17 and 15 races and have a massive lead in both leagues, heading Wrexham and Newcastle (U15s) and Wrexham and Derby (U17s).

The Under 15s race was won by Vale Royal's Stevie Stockton, who was trailed home by Victoria Jones, Corinne Kinvig, Louise Bosson, Emily Deamon and Sophie McCellan.

Victoria Jones now leads the individual league.

In the U17s event, Vale Royal's Emma Coxon was fourth followed by Gemma Lievesley, Lucy Knight and Kate Spils-bury.

In the senior men's race, Vale Royal maintained their fifth place with Gareth Williams finishing 13th out of 200 runners.

He was followed by Mike Weedall , Graham Miles, Pete Maher, Mark Thornley, David Gough, Andy Ault, Philip Monks and Tony Archer.

In the Under 17s boys' race, Stephen Mitchell was fifth and James Griffiths was third in the Under 15s. Also running for the club were Lee Davenport and Michael Carroll. Keiran Kinvig was top Under 13s scorer.

Vale Royal meet at Rudheath leisure centre on Tuesdays at 6.15pm and Knight's Grange, Winsford, on Thursdays at 7pm. Newcomers are welcome.
