ROYAL Chester Rowing Club crews travelled to the Ironbridge Regatta to race on the River Severn on Saturday.
The highlight of the day came from Royal Chester’s veteran novice women’s eight, who were drawn against a Shrewsbury School novice crew.
Age and determination against youth and exuberance promised an enticing contest – and a little bit of spice was added as Nicki Miller in the Royals stroke seat was racing against her own daughter.
Shrewsbury started well and were a quarter of a length ahead before the Chester crew lengthened their strokes and settled into their race rhythm.
Stroke by stroke over the 1,000m course they ate into Shrewsbury’s early lead and by the end of the race Chester’s ladies had opened up a three-length advantage and crossed the line well ahead.
The Royals crew comprised: Zosia Archibald, Lisa Wales, Rowena Siddorn, Angi Wellings, Elaine Arnot, Irene Adam, Jayne Shaw, Nicki Miller and cox Sue Beaumont.
The Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club also enjoyed success at the regatta, in the J14 coxed four (Chris McCartney, Craig Roberts, Leon Langmead, Alex Thomas, cox Danny Wallace), J15 singles (Joel Langmead), J14 singles (Roberts) and J14 doubles (McCartney, Langmead).
