Chester Romans Ladies earned huge respect for two excellent performance in the team's first competitive tournament.

Romans had been preparing for the tournament, part of the British American Football Association's (BAFA) Sapphire Series, since their first contact fixture last summer.

On Sunday, the squad travelled to Oldbury in the West Midlands for matches with hosts Sandwell Steelers and Teeside Steelers, with Birmingham Lions completing the four club line-up.

The Sapphire Series is the national championship for contact football with teams competing across a number of tournaments and earning ranking points from each, which dictates their ranking for the playoffs.

Romans first game saw them take on a Teeside team ranked fourth going into the tournament and whose squad included Great Britain internationals.

Chester stuck to the task exceptionally well against far more experienced opponents, earning praise from the coaches of the other clubs, and some late touchdowns gave Teeside a win that not as comfortable than the scoreboard suggested.

Romans and Sandwell then went toe-to-toe in an absorbing game, which could have gone either way but ended in a narrow win for the hosts.

Chester's performances offered a lot of encouragement for the future and the squad are encouraging any women interested in playing American football to contact them.
