ROMAN Day at Chester Racecourse tomorrow celebrates the historic connections of the site with chariot racing and military displays.

The six races switch the focus back to the present day from 2.05pm when Northern Fling bids to repeat his course and distance win in the five-furlong Warwick International Novice Stakes.

The David Nicholls-trained two-year-old showed good speed inside the final furlong on his last appearance at the Roodee, passing the leaders to pull clear by one-and-aquarter lengths.

Given a favourable low draw, Northern Fling will be well supported to repeat that performance.

Top Bid, trained by Tim Easterby, looks the danger after fulfilling his debut promise when galloping to an eight-length win at Leicester last month.

Several trainers made multiple entries at the five-day stage in the Bryn Thomas Crane Hire Handicap. Both Mark Johnston and Sir Mark Prescott have leading contenders with Scotland Yard and Liberate respectively.

Som Tala gave Liberate four pounds in weight and held the gelding by one length when the pair met at Salisbury two weeks ago and is selected to score again here.

When Souffleur won at San-down last month Som Tala finished four lengths in arrears when giving weight to the winner.

The two are evenly matched and will ensure a competitive race.

The Warwick International Maiden Stakes has attracted several entries with the potential to record a first win. Master Of The Race was disappointing when sent off favourite at York last time out after previously just being touched off on the line at San-down.

Spell Casting hung left-handed in the closing stages on his last appearance when finishing second and could go one closer here.

Collateral Damage had recent Haydock Park winner Skhilling Spirit twoand- a-half lengths in arrears at York last time out.

A runner-up at the Chester May meeting, if the ground has some cut he looks a good prospect for the Warwick International Handicap run over seven furlongs.

Barry Hills has a fine record at Chester and Lyrical Sound, a Leicester winner earlier this month, will be supported by punters.

Alan Bailey's revised entries appear in the Bryn Thomas Crane Hire Claiming Stakes.

Hawkit put up a game performance at win at Ayr last Saturday and will be a popular choice here.

Ionian Spring raced too keenly on his last outing at Windsor and found no extra to finish fourth.

Nuit Sombre finished behind the Clive Cox horse when they met at Chepstow and these two entries should again finish in the frame.

The card closes with the Warwick International Group Handicap over five furlongs.

Bold Minstrel ran over this trip at York on June 16 and was only two lengths behind the winner on his first race-course appearance for more than 12 months.

The four-year-old should come on for that outing and a bold bid is expected.
